Planet3, a Washington, DC- exploration-based learning company, secured $10m in Series A funding.
The round was led by Switch, the Nevada-based developer of the SUPERNAP Data Centers. Rob Roy, CEO of Switch, will serve as Chairman of Planet3.
The company will use the funds to launch its digital learning platform.
Co-founded by CEO Tim Kelly, former President of the National Geographic Society and media veteran, Chief Science Officer Dr. Albert Yu-Min Lin, and Chief Creative Officer Vijay Lakshman, Planet3 has developed a digital learning platform combines game-based environments, real-world context, and standards-based curriculum to present the entire Earth as a living laboratory. It targets Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) subjects.
The first product focuses on middle school Earth, Life, and Physical Sciences, with an initial release scheduled for Fall 2016.
The team of the company also includes Chief Learning Officer Kelly McGrath and Chief Technology Officer Royal O’Brien.
