Portugal, EIB Lends €200M to Two Telecom Companies

-

The EIB agreed two loans to two telecom companies in Portugal for the deployment of a Next Generation Access network.
These operations are aimed at setting up two different Fibre To The Home (FTTH) technology-based networks to offer advanced high speed broadband services throughout the country.
The beneficiaries of these loans are:
– Portugal Telecom SGPS, the incumbent telecom group in Portugal, for an amount of €100m
– ZON Multimedia – Serviços de Telecomunicasções e Multimédia SGPS, a cable operator in Portugal, for an amount of €100m.

In this way, the EIB contributes to a substantial upgrading of telecom services in the country, introducing a major degree of competition in the Portuguese telecoms market.
