SCVNGR, a Cambridge, Mass.-based gaming start-up, has raised $15m in funding.
The round was led by Balderton Capital, with participation from existing investors Google Ventures and Highland Capital Partners.
In conjunction with the funding, Barry Maloney, partner at Balderton, will join the company’s board of directors.
SCVNGR is location-based free iPhone and Android app that allows users to go places and check-in, snap pics or try a challenge to earn points and real-world rewards at over 12,000 locations. For businesses and brands, it gives the opportunity to create rewards at their locations in order to increase engagement and loyalty among customers by making their places more fun.
The company has just closed a partnership with Nissan to build the “Juke The City” challenge. Starting January 3, users living in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco can complete challenges at select places to win a Nissan JUKE™.
