ZIO Studios, a Bogota, Colombia-based animation and gaming company, closed a $1.3m first funding round from Promotora.
The company intends to use the funds to double its current staff of 45 in Colombia, create new games and open offices in California by summer of 2011.
Led by co-founder and newly appointed CEO Alejandro Gonzalez, ZIO creates games, mobile applications and provide animation services to clients in Europe, North America and Asia.
The company is made up of 3 studios:
– BRAINZ, the games and new media unit that recently released the public beta of Social Street Soccer for Facebook, and will be launching the game through major networks in Brazil, Russia and Spain in March 2011 (http://apps.facebook.com/socialstreetsoccer);
– STORYZ, the TV/Film animation production house that released Real-3D short animated film “Dreamcatchers” in early January and is currently developing a feature-length version.
– MOMPOZT, the post-production and visual effects shop.
In conjunction with the funding, Promotora CEO Francisco Mira, joined ZIO’s board of directors.
