Kabam, a San Francisco, Ca.-based free-to-play games, acquired Exploding Barrel Games, a Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada-based creator of experiences for core gamers.
The amount of the deal was not disclosed.
With a team of more than 30 designers, artists, and programmers led by Scott Blackwood, President, Exploding Barrel Games is currently working on three games. The studio includes the creators of blockbuster franchises in multiple core genres, including Need for Speed, Skate, FIFA and SSX, among others.
Commenting on the acquisition, Andrew Sheppard, Kabam’s President of Studios, said: “… the team at Exploding Barrel Games is a perfect complement to Kabam’s mission to blend the art of game design with the science of free-to-play distribution”.
Since 2010, venture backed Kabam has acquired WonderHill, Fearless Studios, Gravity Bear, Wild Shadow Studios and Balanced Worlds.
Titles include The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth, The Godfather: Five Families, Dragons of Atlantis, Edgeworld, Kingdoms of Camelot, and mobile game Kingdoms of Camelot: Battle for the North.
The company, which has a development studio in Beijing and Austin, Texas, as well as customer service and corporate offices in Luxembourg and Germany, is hiring developers and designers in all of its studio locations (read here).
