Squarespace, a New York City-based provider of a website publishing and e-commerce platform, raised $40m in Series B funding.
General Atlantic made the investment. In conjunction with the funding, Anton Levy, managing director and head of Internet & Technology at General Atlantic, will join the company’s board of directors.
The company, which had raised $38.5m from Index Ventures and Accel Partners in 2010 (read here), intends to use the funds to continue scaling its engineering, design, and infrastructure teams to create new products while accelerating global expansion.
Led by Anthony Casalena, CEO and Founder, Squarespace provides small businesses and individuals with a platform to build their own personal and business websites. Its platform (starting at $8 a month) allows users to create websites and online stores while a developer platform provides programming tools for designers and website developers.
The company currently has 285 employees in New York and Dublin, with a Portland office opening later this year, and has hundreds of thousands of customers in 121 countries.
