UpCounsel, a San Francisco, CA-based online marketplace for legal services, raised $2.4m in seed funding.
The round was led by Metamorphic Ventures and Crosslink Capital with participation from previous investor Homebrew and others.
The company intends to use the funds to continue to expand operations into other major business hubs in states like Illinois (Chicago) and Texas (Austin, Dallas and San Antonio).
Led by Matthew Faustman, CEO, UpCounsel provides access to a virtual community of experienced lawyers practicing across dozens of legal areas. Its free software matches attorneys to clients and tasks, and serves as a secure virtual workspace for the parties to manage communications, documents and digital signatures. It guarantees payment, handling billing, and deals with other administrative tasks.
Launched with a primary focus on legal services for startups, it is has expanded its breadth of customers, now servicing companies as large as 800 employees (working directly with their General Counsels), and across numerous industries such as biotech, real estate, retail, food & beverage and even entertainment.
It is working with over 1,000 businesses throughout New York and California.
