Casetext, a Palo Alto, CA-based free legal research website where users can read legal texts annotated by a community of practicing attorneys, raised $7m in Series A funding.
The round was led by Union Square Ventures, with participation from Formation 8, and former Thomson Reuters CEO Tom Glocer. In conjunction with the funding, John Buttrick, partner at Union Square Ventures, will be joining Casetext’s board.
The Y Combinator company will use the funds to expand its legal database and enhance its platform.
Launched in 2013 by Jake Heller, Casetext allows lawyers to share commentary linked to millions of judicial cases and statutes on a research platform. It is used by over 250,000 users each month.
This investment added to the $1.8m in seed funding the company secured in October 2013 from SV Angel, Crosslink Capital, A-Grade Investments, Susa Ventures, Red Sea Ventures, and BoxGroup, among others.
