NewCo, a Petaluma, CA-based event startup, raised $1.7m in seed funding.
Backers included institutional investors Obvious Ventures, True Ventures, Bloomberg Beta, Transmedia Capital, Freestyle Capital, and Foundry Fund, as well as angels Chris Albinson, Andrew Anker, Bart Knaggs, Michael Lazerow, Dave Morgan, Dave Morin, Jordan Shlain, Owen Van Natta, and Michael Winnick.
The company intends to use the funds to expand its staff, build the technology platform, and create new products.
Founded in 2012 by John Battelle and Brian Monahan, NewCo is a conference model and media platform showcasing the networked economy. In each city, the company invites a select number of high growth companies in technology and other fields including retail, healthcare, transportation, media, and energy to open their doors and share their unique story to external people. They have the opportunity to visit these companies and learn from the engines driving real change in a given city.
Cities hosting events include Amsterdam, Austin, Boulder, Cincinnati, Detroit, Istanbul, Los Angeles, Oakland, New York, Silicon Valley, San Francisco and UK.
