ProtonMail, a Geneva, Switzerland-based online email service, raised $2M in funding.
Backers included Charles River Ventures (CRV) and the Fondation Genevoise pour l’Innovation Technologique (FONGIT).
The company intends to use the funds to grow the team and speed up development in the coming months.
Co-founded by Jason Stockman, Andy Yen, and Wei Sun, ProtonMail provides a free web-based encrypted email service designed as a zero knowledge system, using client-side encryption to protect emails and user data before they are sent to ProtonMail servers.
The company had raised over $550,000 in donations from over 10,000 supporters via Indiegogo in 2014.
