D3O, a Farmington Hills, Michigan-based smart materials producer, received $19m in funding.
The round was led by private equity firm Beringea.
The company intends to use the funds for the further expansion of impact protection products and its future international growth.
Led by CEO Stuart Sawyer, D3O provides patented technology used to make an orange-colored material with high shock absorbing properties, used in impact-protection products across many sectors, including sports, military, and work-wear. Recently, the company introduced a new football helmet liner system designed to reduce brain trauma and made safety enhancements in the oil and gas industry with the introduction of a new protective glove, which contains a protective layer of smart skin technology offering coverage across the top of the hand and fingers.
