The MIT Media Lab has launched a $900k Bitcoin Developer Fund.
Created under the The Digital Currency Initiative (DCI), the fund aims to cover salaries, travel and overall support of Bitcoin protocol development efforts, including events like the Scaling Bitcoin workshop series.
The fund will support developers who have made major contributions to Bitcoin software and development and also encourages other universities to house developers so as to not centralize their employment at any one institution.
Donors include such companies as BitFury, Bitmain, Chain, Circle and Nasdaq and such involved individuals as Jim Breyer, Jim Pallotta, Jeff Tarrant, Reid Hoffman and Fred Wilson. The majority of them made their commitment in bitcoin.
