Stripe Receives Strategic Investment from Sumitomo Mitsui Card Company

DashboardStripe, a San Francisco, CA-based fintech startup, received a strategic investment from Sumitomo Mitsui Card Company.

The amount of the deal was not disclosed.

The investment is tied to the launch ot the company’s service in Japan (read here).

Led by Patrick and John Collison, Stripe provides an API solution to accept payments online and in mobile apps. It today processes billions of dollars a year for thousands of businesses, from newly-launched startups to Fortune 500 companies in 25 countries (Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Japan, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand and Switzerland). Web and mobile businesses around the world using Stripe include Twitter, Kickstarter, Shopify, Salesforce, Lyft, and more.
The company, which has received more than $300m in funding to date from investors including Sequoia Capital, Visa, American Express, Peter Thiel, and Elon Musk, now employs approx. 540 people.
