Mapbox, a San Francisco, CA-based mapping and location platform for developers, raised $164m in Series C funding.
The round was led by the SoftBank Vision Fund, with participation from existing investors including Foundry Group, DFJ Growth, DBL Partners, and Thrive Capital.
The company intends to use the funds to build out an automotive unit, including in-car navigation and autonomous driving by expanding its deep learning and vision capabilities, grow its AR/VR/Gaming investments, specifically via the development of the Mapbox Unity SDK team, and accelerate its global expansion across Southeast Asia, China, and Europe.
Founded in 2010 and led by Eric Gundersen, CEO, Mapbox provides developers and businesses with maps, location search, and direction services specific to mobile, AR/VR, and web applications across mobile devices, connected cars, and broader IoT projects. It currently has more than 900,000 registered developers with customer including Snapchat, The Weather Channel, Tableau, IBM, DoorDash, Mastercard, and Instacart, among others.
Mapbox has over 280 employees with global locations in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Bangalore, Berlin, Shanghai, and Ayacucho.
