Mosa Meat, a Maastricht, The Netherlands-based spin off company from Maastricht University that aims to bring cultured meat to market by 2021, raised €7.5M in Series A funding.
The round was co-led by M Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of science and technology company Merck, and Bell Food Group, a meat processor in Switzerland with operations across Europe. They are joined by the Glass Wall Syndicate.
The company intends to use the funds to develop an end-to-end process for cultured meat production, to prepare for the construction of a pilot production plant for the introduction of a premium product in 2021.
Co-founded by Chief Scientific Officer Prof Mark Post, the world’s leading scientist in the field, and led by CEO Peter Verstrate, Mosa Meat presented a beef burger made directly from cow cells in 2013. Having proven the concept, the company is now developing the first commercial products.
