Tech giant Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL)acquired Spektral, a Copenhagen, Denmark-based visual effects company that applies machine learning to image and video editing, for reportedly $30m.
According to Danish newspaper Børsen, the deal was closed last year.
Co-founded in 2016 by Toke Jansen and Henrik Paltoft, Spektral (formerly known as CloudCutout) leveraged research in machine learning for real-time compositing and to give users superior opportunities to create and work with cutouts of images and video and generate mixed reality content for video in real-time.
At the beginning of 2017, the company worked with algorithms to get this technology available on a smartphone and thereby enable anyone anywhere to create mixed reality content.
The acquisition will presumably enable the Cupertino-based company to boost AR features or to create a next to come AR headset.
