Spotify (NYSE: SPOT), a global audio streaming and media services provider, acquired Podz, a NYC-based podcast discovery platform.
The amount of the deal was not disclosed.
The acquisition will enable Spotify to expand its podcast discovery capabilities.
Spotify has had machine learning experts focused on improving audio discovery for almost a decade, but there is more work to be done. We believe that Podz’ technology will complement and accelerate Spotify’s focused efforts to drive discovery, deliver listeners the right content at the right time, and accelerate growth of the category worldwide.
Powered by machine learning technology, Podz generates clips that give users the opportunity to preview key moments from podcast episodes, and to discover and listen to new podcasts.
Led by CEO Doug Imbruce, CTO Seye Ojumu, Head of Design Rasmus Zwickson and iOS lead Greg Page, the company raised $2.5m in pre-seed funding from M13, Canaan Partners, Charge Ventures and Humbition, Katie Couric, Paris Hilton and Mara Schiavocampo.
