Known Medicine Raises $7.2M in Seed Funding

Known Medicine, a Salt Lake City, Utah-based 3D cell culture data set company, raised $7.2M in seed funding.

The round was led by Caffeinated Capital, with participation from Khosla Ventures, Cota Capital, Kickstart, Forward VC, OATV, Y Combinator, Chris Gibson and Nish Bhat.

The company intends to use the funds to grow its proprietary 3D cell culture data set for deployment in partnership with biopharmaceutical companies and in the clinical diagnostics space.

Led by Andrea Mazzocchi, Ph.D., co-founder and CEO, Known Medicine provides a 3D cell culture data set that predicts the drug for every cancer patient and create the drug for every cancer. Through machine learning-based image analysis, it determines tumor sensitivity and the potential for drug resistance.

The company’s Oncology Diagnostics Inference Network (ODINTM) Platform uses proprietary organoid models called M3DUSATM Models and a bespoke image analysis pipeline – IRISTM Analysis to predict how well a patient’s tumor will respond to a specific treatment method before it is prescribed.

The M3DUSATM Model is a 3D organoid model developed and optimized to recreate the tumor microenvironment. The model is formulated using automation-friendly hydrogel components and includes cancer, stromal and immune cells.
