Rex, a NYC-based photo-based recommendations app, raised $3.96M in funding.
The round was led by Accel, with participation from Khosla Ventures, Future Positive, and angel investors that include current and former leaders from Twitter, Snap, and Pinterest.
The company intends to use the funds to expand its development efforts for its app, which has just been launched out of beta.
Led by CEO Aliza Rosen, Rex simplifies the process of sharing personal recommendations by mining a phone’s camera roll. Using AI and computer vision, the app identifies photos of restaurants, museums, bars, hotels, and trailheads, and turns them into “rex” people can easily organize into curated playlists. These playlists serve as a personal tool to keep track of places users have been and want to return to. And they’re readily shareable, so friends can discover these spots, too. Users can curate Rex playlists however they like – by city, cuisine, or theme, and build playlists of places they want to go in the future from friends’ rex. The app makes it easy to see which friends or friends-of-friends have been to a specific location via an interactive map that you can filter by individual. People can follow friends, and see new places on the feed as they discover them.
