Descript, a San Francisco, CA-based video and audio editor, acquired SquadCast, a remote recording studio.
The amount of the deal was not disclosed.
With the acquisition, podcasters and video creators now have a single free tool for their entire production workflow, from recording to publishing. Descript customers will get remote recording included immediately in their subscriptions for free. SquadCast customers can choose to switch their subscription to Descript to get its editing capabilities at no additional cost.
Founded by Groupon co-founder Andrew Mason in San Francisco in 2017, Descript is a video editor that empowers YouTube and TikTok channels, top podcasts, and businesses using video for marketing, sales, internal training and collaboration with AI-powered features built into an intuitive interface. With such features as AI voices, Studio Sound, transcription, automatic filler word removal, Regenerate, Eye Contactl, Descript’s adaptability allows any creator, in any type of workflow, to create anything from an audio podcast to a multicam video with multiple layers of video, b-roll, audio, with video and audio effects, and transitions.
The company has raised a total of $100M from Andreessen Horowitz, OpenAI, Redpoint Ventures, and Spark Capital. Individual investors include Daniel Gross, Devdatta Akhawe, Alex Blumberg, Jack Conte, Justine Ezarik, Todd Goldberg, Jean-Denis Greze, John Lilly, Tobi Lutke, Bharat Mediratta, Shishir Mehrotra, Casey Neistat, Brian Pokorny, Raghavendra Prabhu, Lenny Rachitsky, Naval Ravikant, Jay Simons, Jake Shapiro, Rahul Vohra, and Ev Williams.
