Databricks to Acquire Tabular

Databricks

Databricks, a San Francisco data and AI company, acquired Tabular, a San Jose, California-based data management company.

The proposed acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, and is expected to close in Databricks’ second fiscal quarter. The amount of the deal was not disclosed.

With the acquisition, Databricks will expand its offerings by bringing together the original creators of Apache Iceberg™ and Linux Foundation Delta Lake, the two open source lakehouse formats.

Founded by Ryan Blue, Daniel Weeks, and Jason Reid, Tabular is an open table store from the creators of Apache Iceberg. It’s an independent data platform that lets organizations work with a single storage layer simultaneously across Spark, Trino, Flink, Snowflake and other compute engines and frameworks. A fully managed SaaS offering, it includes integrated ingestion, automated performance optimization and centralized security.

Led by CEO Ali Ghodsi, Databricks provides over 10,000 organizations worldwide — including Block, Comcast, Condé Nast, Rivian, Shell and over 60% of the Fortune 500 — with a platform to take control of their data and put it to work with AI.
