Restate, a Berlin, Germany-based startup that takes the guesswork out of building distributed applications, raised $7m in seed funding.

The round was led by Redpoint Ventures, with participation from Essence VC, firstminute.capital, and several prominent angels including Jay Kreps and Neha Narkhede (co-founders of Confluent), Oli Pomel (founder of Datadog), Shawn “Swyx” Wang, and others.

The company is using the funds primarily for hiring and product development.

Founded by Stephan Ewen (CEO), one of the original creators of Apache Flink, alongside co-founders Till Rohrmann and Igal Shilman, with a team of leading infra engineers from Meta, AWS and Apple, Restate makes distributed applications easier to build. Core to the system is a workflows-as-code (also called Durable Execution) implemented on a specialized event log that lets it handle use cases that have previously been out of reach for workflow systems.

Restate is low latency, lightweight to run, and interoperates with serverless platforms (FaaS). Its APIs let developers use workflows-as-code semantics and other tools like Durable Promises/Futures or atomic state directly in their functions and (micro)services, rather than needing to refactor and redeploy the application to a workflow system.

The company has launched its first publicly available stable open source version, as well as early access to Restate Cloud – a fully serverless offering that will eventually have paid tiers.

Restate has already taken off with developers, with hundreds using its early open source version that was first released in December 2023.
