Substrate Closes $8M Seed Funding

Substrate

Substrate, a NYC-based AI infrastructure startup, raised $8M in Seed funding.

The round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from South Park Commons, Craft Ventures, Guillermo Rauch (Vercel), Immad Akhund (Mercury), Will Gaybrick (Stripe), and others.

The company intends to use the funds to expand its market for inference solutions and bring modern AI capabilities to all software engineers.

Led by CEO Rob Cheung, Substrate is a provider of an API for modular AI. It enables users to build fast multi-step AI programs using optimized models, colocated file and vector storage, a code interpreter, and logical control flow. Its API for AI harnesses curated open-source AI models across various modalities like text, images, audio, and semantic vectors, and optimizes these models to run at scale.

Substrate is designed to run multi-inference programs as fast as possible. Programs are analyzed as a graph and optimized to maximize parallelism and throughput. All nodes in the graph are guaranteed to execute in the same cluster.

Early customers include Substack and Maven.
