Vertus Energy, an Austria, Vienna-based Waste-to-X industrial biotech startup, raised €8.75M in Seed funding.
The round was led by Energy Capital Ventures, joined by Blackbird, the Amadeus APEX Technology Fund and Aussie Angels, alongside all their existing investors. Other participants included Startmate, Icehouse Ventures and Outset Ventures, Aussie Angels and John Wood with NOAB Ventures.
The company intends to use the funds to accelerate the adoption of its BRIO technology in commercial units across various applications, from full scale wastewater treatment plants to the large-scale biogas plants, that are integral components of the renewable energy ecosystem.
Co-founded by CTO Dr. Danilo Perez, Chief Engineer Freddy Gonzalez, COO Benjamin Howard, and CCOSantiago de los Reyes, Vertus Energy is an industrial biotechnology company working for the Waste to X* industry by developing and commercialising control of bacteria behaviour. Its flagship product, BRIO, creates a platform that controls the bacteria within anaerobic digestion plants by retrofitting their modular hardware unit that has the ability to generate more energy. This promises to make biomethane more economically viable and accessible, contributing to the EU’s renewable energy targets.
*Waste-to-X (WtX) refers to a set of technologies and solutions that treat waste as a resource rather than a problem. The “X” in Waste-to-X can represent a variety of outputs, such as energy, fuels, or other valuable products.
