California Catalist (fka H2U Technologies), a Chatsworth, CA-based developer of advanced materials for electrolysis, raised $3M in Series A-2 funding.

The round, which brought the total amount to $18M, included participation from Volo Earth Ventures, Dolby Family Ventures, Freeflow Ventures, Hess, Motus Ventures and Jericho Energy Ventures and added new investors Acario Innovation (the corporate venture arm of Tokyo Gas) and MOL Switch (the venture arm of Mitsui OSK Lines).

The company intends to use the funds to support the productization of their non-Iridium catalysts and coatings for PEM electrolysis cells, widely used in the production of Green Hydrogen.

Led by CEO Jourdan Urbach, California Catalysts is a developer of advanced materials and stack components for low-cost hydrogen production at scale. Based on years of scientific research at Caltech funded by the Department of Energy, it uses AI alongside proprietary material testing methods to discover and evaluate low-cost electrocatalysts, increasing the pace of sustainable material development and reducing costs by orders of magnitude.

The company already partners with the likes of SoCal Gas, Tokyo Gas (owner of new investor Acario Innovation), and DeNora.
