Counsel Health, a Canton, MA-based virtual medical practice specializing in messaging-based care, came out of stealth alongside $11M in Seed funding.

The round was led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) Bio + Health, with participation from Asymmetric Capital Partners, Floodgate Fund, Pear VC, and the founders of numerous leading healthcare startups.

The company intends to use the funds to accelerate its nation-wide expansion, expand coverage to millions more members, and further advance its technology.

Founded in 2023 by Dr. Muthu Alagappan, alongside a founding team of senior physicians and engineers from Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Mount Sinai, NVIDIA, Stanford, and the MIT Media Lab, Counsel Health Counsel Health has built a physician-led, AI-native asynchronous care platform that provides patients 24/7 access to the world’s highest quality medical advice from real clinicians — giving every person the feeling of having a doctor in their family. With Counsel, patients can message a doctor with any medical question and receive a scientific, accurate, and empathetic response within minutes. Today, patients use Counsel for everything from asking complex medical questions and seeking urgent care to receiving second opinions and assistance with difficult end-of-life decisions.

Counsel currently serves tens of thousands of patients through partnerships with national health plans and provider organizations. The service is currently available in many of the nation’s biggest geographic markets including California, New York, Massachusetts, Florida, and Texas, with the company planning to expand into all 50 states over the next two years.

Dr. Muthu Alagappan is a former AI researcher turned primary care physician and startup executive, with decades of collective experience in building transformative healthcare technologies for patients and providers.
