Vema Hydrogen, a Wilmington, DE-based company developing stimulated geologic hydrogen (SGH), raised $13M in Seed funding.

The round was co-led by Extantia Capital with Propeller Ventures with participation from Zero Carbon Capital, Pace Ventures and existing investor Grantham Foundation.

The company intends to use the funds for the development of the first clusters of full-scale SGH pilot wells in North America.

Founded by Florian Osselin and Pierre Levin, Vema was created at the venture studio Marble. Its Stimulated Geologic Hydrogen technology has the potential to provide a clean, reliable, and affordable source of hydrogen. The company’s technology harnesses naturally occurring reactions that produce hydrogen underground. A brine solution containing catalysts is injected into shallow geological formations, where it reacts with iron bearing minerals to produce hydrogen. The hydrogen is then extracted and can be used to generate electricity, heat, or green chemicals and fuel.

Vema’s SGH approach eliminates the uncertainties associated with exploration by enabling hydrogen production in strategically selected locations, thereby significantly reducing logistical challenges and costs. This method also allows for precise control over gas composition and flow rates, presenting a scalable and economically attractive alternative to other exploration techniques.
