Lightmatter, a Boston, MA-based maker of an ultra efficient light-powered AI chip, received $22m in Series A-1 funding.
The round, which brought the total Series A raise to $33m, was led by GV, with participation from existing investors Matrix Partners and Spark Capital. In conjunction with the funding, GV partner Tyson Clark joined Lightmatter’s board of directors.
The company intends to use the funds to continue the development of its light-powered computing platform.
Founded in 2017 by Dr. Nicholas Harris, Darius Bunandar, and Thomas Graham at MIT. Lightmatter leverages photonic processor technology to make optical computer chips which leverage the unique properties of light, rather than electrical signals, to enable fast and efficient inference and training engines for processing.
