Delta g, a new University of Birmingham (UK) spinout which has developed a new approach to mapping complex subsurface and unseen locations, raised £1.5m in pre-seed funding.

The funding round was led by Science Creates Ventures, with participation from Quantum Exponential Group, Newable Ventures, Bristol Private Equity Club, as well as angel investors such as Hitesh Thakrar and Howard Covington.

The company intends to use the funds to fast-track the commercial availability of its quantum technology gravity gradiometry sensors for mapping the underground space.

Founded by Professor Michael Holynski, Dr Andrew Lamb and Jonathan Winch, and led by CEO Pete Stirling, Delta G leverages technology developed at the University of Birmingham, as part of the UK Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Timing to advance a gravity gradiometry platform for mapping the underground space and seeing subsidence and erosion, maintenance tunnels, underground transport networks and buried utilities.

In addition to its funding round, Delta g has been awarded a c. £500k innovation grant from Innovate UK to accelerate the delivery of a commercial product and begin the development of a sector-agonistic gravity gradient platform.
