Instacart Closes $220M Series C Financing

instacartAs FinSMEs anticipated (read here), Instacart, a San Francisco, CA-basedĀ grocery delivery service whose personal shoppers hand pick and deliver items from trusted local stores, closed a $220m round of Series C financing.

The round was led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) with participants Comcast Ventures, Dragoneer Investment Group, Thrive Capital, Valiant Capital and previous investors Andreessen Horowitz, Khosla Ventures and Sequoia.Ā In conjunction with the funding, Mary Meeker, general partner at KPCB, will become anĀ Instacart’sĀ board observer.

The company, which has now raisedĀ $275M,Ā plans to use the funds toward category expansion, continued geographic growth and technology enhancements.

Led by Founder and CEO Apoorva Mehta, Instacart leveragesĀ a crowdsourced labor force of personal shoppers who shop for and deliver orders using their own transportation in as little as one hourĀ at customers’ homes. Founded in in 2012, the service has scaled to 15 cities across the US and partnered with 50 grocery retailers, including popular national chains (Whole Foods Market, Costco) as well as local, artisan grocers (Fairway Market, Bi-Rite).
