Charge Communication, a San Francisco, CA-based messaging and voice calling platform for mobile and web, closed a $1.7m seed round of funding.
Backers included Pelion Venture Partners, Atlas Venture, Maiden Lane, Metamorphic Ventures, Cherubic Ventures and others.
The company intends to use the funds to expand operations.
Led by Andrew Benton and Christopher Goddard, Charge Communication has developed Charge Messenger, which provides a cross-platform messaging experience that allows users to send and receive messages with anyone who has a phone number. Charge Messenger lets users use their own mobile phone number rather than a user name or new number, so people can communicate with friends, family and contacts on iOS, Android or a web browser.
The company’s Messenger sends all messages via a WiFi connection or a device’s data plan (carrier data charges will likely apply) with no additional charges or fees.
