MasterClass, a San Francisco, CA-based digital learning platform offering online classes taught by world-class experts and renowned instructors, raised $15m in Series B funding round.
The round was led by New Enterprise Associates, with participation from Bloomberg Beta, Novel TMT Ventures, Advancit Capital, WME Ventures, Downey Ventures, Usher, Yan-David Erlich and Matthew Rutler (MX Investments). In conjunction with the funding, Rick Yang (Partner at NEA) is joining MasterClass’s Board of Directors.
The company, which has also revealed a previously undisclosed $4.5m Series A round led by Javelin Venture Partners and two seed rounds totaling $1.9m both led by Harrison Metal, intends to use the funds to expand the roster of instructors, accelerate class production in new subject areas, grow the team and further build upon proprietary technology.
Launched in May 2015 by Creative Director and CTO Aaron Rasmussen and CEO David Rogier, MasterClass provides digital learning platform offering online masters taught by experts and renowned instructors, including Kevin Spacey, Christina Aguilera, Dustin Hoffman, Usher, James Patterson, Annie Leibovitz, and Serena Williams. Curriculums are developed individually by each instructor to reflect their own unique approach. Each class includes 10-25 video lessons, interactive exercises, learning materials and workbooks, and is accessible from any device for $90.
